The Best Countries to Move to for Work in 2024

For many people, the new year means the chance to reassess their lives and start afresh; this can mean a move to a new country, a new job, or both. The Moving Partnership can offer free online moving quotes for removals to destinations across the world. Here we look at some of the most popular places to move to for work reasons.

New Zealand

As an English-speaking country, there’s no language barrier (and few cultural barriers) if you are considering removals to New Zealand from the UK. There is also plenty of seasonal work available – mostly in skiing (pictured above – the country is one of few in the southern hemisphere, and the season lasts from mid-June to early November) and other areas of tourism. Other sectors such as agriculture also need extra workers during the picking seasons.

New Zealand is a very welcoming country with a good work-life balance – most people don’t often work over their allotted hours as there is a healthy culture of valuing free time spent with friends, family or just solo hobbies.

There are also plenty of sports to enjoy outdoors, most of which will be familiar to UK residents, notably rugby, cricket, sailing and other watersports.

Australia

Much like New Zealand, there’s plenty to do outdoors in Australia (their sports of choice are similar to NZ) and a good work-life balance.

There is a large British expat population in the country, particularly in the major cities such as Sydney and Brisbane, so you shouldn’t have any problems settling in and making friends.

It might be worth checking out a work exchange website, as these are quite common – the usual setup is food and accommodation in exchange for labour – usually garden or farm work.

Canada

Again, Canada is another English-speaking country with a large British expat population (although native Canadians are renowned for being welcoming).

If you are thinking about Canada removals for work reasons, then there are plenty of employee benefits. Along with the annual paid holiday allowance and high minimum wage, there’s other excellent state benefits, including high-quality healthcare, flexible working hours, and generous parental leave if you are thinking of starting a family (or expanding your current one).

Healthcare is one of the sectors where there are plenty of vacancies, as well as IT, research and energy.

The cost of living in Canada can be quite high but, much like Scandinavian countries, that is one of the prices to pay for having such a good support system from the state.

Denmark

If you are considering house removals to Scandinavia, then Denmark is always a popular place to move to – it always scores highly in world satisfaction surveys conducted every year and it’s currently second in the World Happiness Index, which looks at a range of measures including life expectancy, social support and the economic health of the nation.

Like Canada, the cost of living can be high – particularly when it comes to housing and food – but the flipside is (again) an excellent healthcare and education system; and public transport is cheap as well given the popularity of cycling amongst the Danish.

English isn’t the country’s first language, but it is widely spoken, and some colleges and universities offer degrees in the subject – meaning that English literacy in Denmark is quite high.

When it comes to jobs, there are plenty of options for the English speaker, ranging from au pair work to teaching English on one of the aforementioned ESL courses. Many of the various research posts and internships across multiple business sectors would also be suitable for a native English speaker.

Portugal

Many people (including retirees) opt to move to Portugal from the UK, and the reasons aren’t hard to find!

It’s closer to the UK than some of the other countries listed above, and the warm climate and plentiful beaches are other aspects which make Portugal an attractive moving option, particularly if you are thinking about international removals to the Algarve area of the country.

Portugal also offers a digital nomad visa, which gives would-be tech experts the chance to work in the country remotely. Post-Covid, many countries introduced these visas to attract foreign talent, and they wouldn’t necessarily need to work in an office but could do so from their own home. This is a step up from a tourist visa as it allows you to work legally in your new country.

This may help millennials who are interested in European DIY removals, who don’t have much to pack and who may not want to be tied down in one place for a long period of time.
