About Nice - France
Nice is nicely nestled in a bay on the Mediterranean. It’s a very popular destination amongst tourists and expatriates alike with its warm, dry climate and lovely long beaches. The capital of the Côte d'Azur, Nice is a truly cosmopolitan destination. Visitors and expatriates come from all over Europe to enjoy the sunshine and the relaxed pace of life that pervades this part of the world.
The French Riviera is perfect for sun lovers. Here you are able to sunbathe, paddle and swim in the azure blue sea and get involved in the adrenaline fuelled sports of waterskiing, parascending and jet-skiing. Or if all that sounds a little high octane for you, you can simply chill out with a smooth cocktail in one of the many fine bars and restaurants that line the promenade des Anglais.
Aside from the sunbathing and watersports, the sightseeing in Nice is remarkable. Much of the architecture is historic and dates back to the 17th Century. Make a point, when you are touring the city, to look out for the Palais Lascaris in Old Town Nice; the building is breathtaking to look at, both outside and in. It is beautifully decorated and the grand staircase really is something to behold. Other landmark buildings are the Cathédrale de Sainte Réparate in Place Rossetti which is the central square of Old Town Nice and the Monastère Notre Dame de Cimiez which, whilst only ranked 112th out of the top 165 things to do in Nice according to Lonely Planet, is of historical importance because it is where the artist Henri Matisse is buried.
Other photo opportunities within the city are the Basilique Notre Dame and the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicolas which was built to honour the dead son of Russian Tsar Nicholas II and is the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral outside Russia. The 16th-century Fort of Mont Alban is definitely worth seeing as is the relatively young Nice Acropolis which stands as an eye-catching multimedia and conference centre. There is also the Old Port which is filled with lovely yachts and surrounded by a number of grand buildings dating back to the 18th-century.
For the culture vultures among you, there are a number of interesting museums and some very popular art galleries to peruse, chief among which are the The Museum of Paleontology the Archaeological Museum and the Regional Museum of the Asian Arts. Budding artistes or art lovers will appreciate the Museum of Fine Arts located on the Avenue des Baumettes and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, aka MAMAC, on the Avenue St. Jean Baptiste, which is full of modern paintings and pop art.
The architectural landscape of Nice is as diverse as it is interesting. Many of the municipal buildings, including the central train station and larger hotels are grand in the extreme. The Hotel Negresco for example, is the most elegant hotel in Nice. Situated along the Promenade des Anglais, directly across from the beach it is perfectly placed, commanding a wonderful view of the bay area.
One of the main squares in Nice is Place Massena with its distinctive chequer board paving and space age trams. This attractive plaza is situated at the southern end of Avenue Jean Medecin, a major route through the city. The square can now be reached by tramway, directly from the railway station. Nice is a popular location for national and international conferences and many of these conferences are held in the modern buildings located around the Place Massena as well as the Acropolis Conference Centre.
