Removals to Luxembourg City with The Moving Partnership
Luxembourg City has been called the ‘Gibraltar of the North’ due to an imposing fortress which helped deter any would-be invaders. Although the fortress has long since been demolished, the title is still well deserved, as the capital city still enjoys some excellent views has over the surrounding countryside.
But it isn’t just for the scenery that people move here. Here The Moving Partnership looks at some of the other reasons why many people are opting for international removals to Luxembourg City.
It’s a Cosmopolitan City
Not one but three languages are recognised and taught in the city’s schools - French, German and Luxembourgish. Although none of these are the ‘official’ language, the bulk of the population are proficient in all three. Other languages which are widely spoken are Italian, Portuguese and English. This is in part down to the fact that, in the country as a whole, almost half the population are either foreign-born or guest workers. This means, wherever you are coming from, you should be able to find an expat community to join.
The Sound Economy
If you are looking for employment security, then Luxembourg – and particularly its capital – is the place to go. It has one of the highest minimum wages in Europe, the second-highest GDP per person in the world (behind only Qatar), low tax rates and virtually full employment.
The Welfare State
There’s a compulsory public health insurance system that covers 98% of the population, and many people choose to top it up with additional contributions to cover any gap between fees and what you are reimbursed.
There’s also an education system that is modelled on the French system, which awards an internationally-recognised baccalaureate. Many students opt to travel abroad for university, although there is a University of Luxembourg.
There’s Free Public Transport
Admittedly any journeys within the country won’t take very long, but even so, free public transport is not something to be sniffed at. It applies to trains, trams and buses all across the country.
The only services you do have to pay for are first class or night buses. Despite not needing a ticket of any description, you may have to show proof of identity to the conductor if they ask for it.
There’s also a self-service bike scheme, with collection stations at various points around the city. And, don’t forget, the city centre can easily be explored on foot as well, due to its small size.
And There’s Excellent Connections Too
If you fancy going back to your ‘home’ country then there are plenty of services to get you there. Luxembourg Airport, previously known as Findel Airport due to the nearby village it is located in, will get you to most major destinations in Europe, including the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and Portugal.
There are also regular train services to Koblenz in Germany, the Belgian capital Brussels and Paris. The first two are InterCity services while the trip to the French capital is via high-speed TGV.
Attractions in Luxembourg City
There’s plenty of reasons to stay in and around the city. Make sure you have a good look around the Ville Haute, or High City, which is the historic medieval town centre where many of the shops and restaurants are located.
There’s also the Low City, or Ville Basse, which is the most picturesque area. The Casemates Bock is a network of underground fortifications on the site of the city’s first castle. These are an UNESCO World Heritage Site (although they are closed at the moment).
In late August to early September, the Glacis district of the city hosts the Schueberfouer, a truly spectacular funfair that is particularly popular with the younger members of the city’s population.
