Removals to Australia – Perth

Most people, when they think of Australia, associate it with the major cities on the east coast – Sydney, with its Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Bondi Beach, or Melbourne, with its iconic cricket ground (or MCG, as fans of the sport will know). But in the west of the country is another city with plenty to recommend it – Perth.

The Moving Partnership, who offer international removals to Perth as well as the rest of Australia, take a look at a city which owes its name to its Scottish counterpart, and has a healthy British expat population.

The History and Heritage

The Western Australian state capital takes its name from Perth in Scotland. This is in honour of Scot Sir George Murray, the UK’s Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, when Australia was part of the British Empire, in 1829. However, many Aboriginal tribes – particularly the Noongar – had lived in the area for at least thousands of years before then.

Perth became a city in 1856, its population having been boosted by convicts arriving from England; it also had its own Gold Rush in the mid-19th century, and mining boosted both the population and the economy. Even today it owes much of its continued prosperity as the main service centre for Western Australia’s mining industries.

Overall, it has much more of a ‘town’ feel than other state capitals – partly because it’s smaller, and partly because it’s more isolated. It’s easier to get to some Asian countries than the rest of Australia.

Getting There and Getting Around

All domestic and international flights go through Perth International Airport (PER). You can also arrive by boat to Fremantle, further up the Swan River – before the days of widespread air travel this was the only way to get there.

The Indian Pacific railway runs from Perth to Sydney via Adelaide; note because of the vast distances involved the journey takes four days and three nights. Once you arrive, Transperth run the public transport system, which has good reviews – it’s frequent and fairly reliable.  It includes buses, trains and a passenger ferry service across the Swan River. Increasingly, people are seeing the sights on foot or by bike – the relatively small size of the city allows them to do this.

The Main Attractions

Along with the mining service industries, tourism is a major driver of the city’s economy, so there’s plenty to see and do. Kings Park (pictured above in the foreground) is a 1,000-acre green space with lots of individual attractions inside, including the Western Australian Botanic Garden, the State War Memorial, and dedicated children’s areas.

Perth Zoo is to the south of the city and has more than 160 species and 1,200 animals split into three main zones – Australian Walkabout, Asian Rainforest and African Savannah. For marine life, go to Marmion Marine Park, on Perth’s northern coast.  If you’d prefer to enjoy the coast yourself, then Cottesloe Beach is where the bulk of the sun-seekers go.

The Perth Cultural Centre is home to many of the city’s major venues, including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Western Australian Museum, the State Library and the city and state’s theatre companies.

There’s plenty of sport to take part in and watch, thanks to the sunny climate. Aussie Rules Football is the most popular spectator sport, while the WACA ground has hosted Test cricket since 1970.

Shopping Around and Eating Out

The main shopping areas are Murray Street and Hay Street – both of these have pedestrianised malls. For something more independent or artisan, try one of the regular markets in nearby Fremantle – you are more likely to find home-grown vegetables and individual crafts.

Perth’s closeness to the Indian Ocean means there’s plenty of seafood on offer in restaurants, including rock lobster (crayfish), barramundi (Asian seabass), pasta dishes (thanks to the large numbers of Italians who settled here after World War II) and, for a more unusual dish, kangaroo – the meat has been described as being like a lean cut of beef. There’s plenty of local wines to try as well.
