Removals to Norway - A Guide to Trondheim

Moving Home to Norway

With a population of just over 193,500, Trondheim is the third largest city in Norway. Founded over a thousand years ago, it has a strong history, with a rich culture of museums and galleries and a thriving contemporary food scene.

The Moving Partnership  provides efficient and cost-effective removals for those  moving home to Norway. We have built strong professional relationships with the best removals firms in Europe to provide our clients with quick and stress-free moves to or from Norway. Here we explore Norway’s historic city of Trondheim.

A History of  Trondheim

Although there is evidence of people living in the region for thousands of years , Trondheim was founded as a settlement and trading post in the year 997  by Viking King, Olaf Tryggvasonand, who built a church and royal residence there.

Even though it is not a big city on a European scale, Trondheim is the third largest in Norway and is the capital of the Trøndelagâ  region. The city served as the Norwegian capital until the year 1217.

Getting There

Flights to Trondheim from the UK take around 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can get there by road by travelling through the Netherlands, into Germany and up through Denmark  – although driving will take around 26 hours.

Local Geography

Trondheim lies on a sheltered peninsula on the south shore of the Trondheim Fjord at the mouth of the River Nidelva, 23 miles south east of the Norwegian Sea. It is a major land and sea transport link for Norway, connecting the more densely-populated south with the far-northern regions.

Trondheim is also a Norwegian manufacturing hub, specialising in metal, paper products, bricks and tiles, as well as being a major centre for food processing (mostly fish).

Things to Do

The wide range of things to do in Trondheim may well be attributed to the city’s huge student population, who number more than 30,000 - the students leave their mark on the city by arranging many events, as well as attending the city’s other cultural offerings.

The Nidarosdomen Cathedral is an impressive sight - it is the national sanctuary of Norway, built over the grave of St. Olav. Work began on the cathedralâ in 1070, but the oldest parts still in existence date from the middle of the 12th century.

Popular museums with exciting exhibitions include the National Museum of Decorative Arts, the Trondheim Museum of Art ¯and the Archbishop’s Palace Museum. A museum that stands in stark contrast to these is  Rockheim, Norway’s national museum of pop music.

A popular area ideal for walking and jogging  is Bymarka, with a  network of marked trails criss-crossing the reserve, leading to viewpoints, rest areas and cabins selling refreshments.
The intimate city centre combined with the exciting shops makes Trondheim a popular city for shopping. Here you can enjoy many independent shops selling clothes and accessories that you won’t find everywhere.

Food and Drink

Trondheim is one of the places in Norway with a strong focus on local food. “Bula” is common Norwegian slang for ¯a low-key place to eat, drink, and socialise and is a word you will hear a lot around the city.

Many local establishments, including pubs, cafés and restaurants, serve a wide range of excellent locally-brewed beers, preferably served together with food specially developed to accompany the  beer. A new wave of microbreweries, together with several novel coffee shops, continues a long local Trondheim brewing tradition.

The city has a weekly farmer’s market next to the traditional  Ravnkloa fish market and every August they have a huge food festival called Trøndersk festival.
