About Queluz – Portugal

Queluz lies in the Sintra municipality, in the Greater Lisbon area, and has a population of just under 80,000. It’s ideal for those who want to live in Queluz but work in the capital as the journey to Lisbon takes just under a 30 minutes by car (depending on traffic) and 20 minutes by train.

A Brief History of Queluz

The city is steeped in history, and there is evidence of human settlements that date right back to the late Neolithic period. From the first century, right up to the 18th century, the city was built around homes and farmland established either by the church or nobility. In this period, the city was dominated by the National Palace, which was once a hunting lodge and later became a summer royal residence. Nowadays, this stunning palace is a prime tourist attraction, and appears in a multitude of photographs in books, on the web and promotional literature.

Things to do in Queluz

In the light of this, the breath-taking National Palace is a must see.  Known as Portugal’s Versailles, it is one of Europe’s last and greatest Rococo buildings. This much-visited attraction has a wealth of history as it was the summer home for Dom Pedro Braganza, husband of the unstable Queen Maria I; it later became the official residence of Portugal’s Prince Regent John VI. One wing of the extensively restored palace is still used today to accommodate foreign heads of state. In summer you can enjoy a trip back in time at the Seventeenth Fair, which recreates the heyday of the Palace.

Alternatively, for those who like to be active, there are several parks around the city for jogging, walks or cycling. One of the places where you might want to spend your time is the recreational park of Felício Loureiro, which extends along the river and has an exercise circuit for outdoor workouts.

Queluz has a number of restaurants from cosy Portuguese eateries, with period features such as wooden beams, to more modern dining establishments offering European fare. You will stumble across a number of delightful hidden gems as you explore the city, including Italian and Asian restaurants. Most people get about by foot or bus.
