About Stockholm – Sweden

“The Venice of the North” as it is known, the city of Stockholm is comprised of 14 separate islands. Referred to by many as the capital of Scandinavia it is the most widely visited of all the Scandinavian cities and a trip around its centre will quickly reveal why.

This archipelago has so much to offer. The waterways, streets, open squares, parklands and gardens team with life and the Swedes love to get out to enjoy the sunshine in the clean, fresh air. Temperatures settle at between 60 and 70 degrees F in the summer and whilst this is not scorching, due to the gentle sea breezes, it is a very pleasant climate.

Stockholm’s network of waterways makes island hopping and boat cruises extremely popular whatever the time of year and there are photo opportunities aplenty as you gently meander around the “lanes”. From a practical perspective, a boat is the best form of transport you can take in the city and many of the inhabitants sail to work rather than drive. A comprehensive ferry service and many water taxis operate between central Stockholm and the outlying islands making it easy for all to get around.

As you might expect in this watery city, many of the restaurants and inns offer a seafood menu and the range and freshness of the catch is hard to beat. A local speciality is Baltic Herring but if you’re going to try it, go for the smaller, younger fish, as they’re much better for you.

Since water covers at least one third of the city’s area, all things maritime form an important aspect of city life. There are plenty of bridges, marinas and locks and it is reported that the water is so clean you can drink it.

Another beautiful part of Stockholm is the city’s gardens and parklands. The green spaces are kept lush and verdant by a constant supply of quality fresh water and are a joy to visit. You will see the city’s people, walking, cycling and roller-skating around the parks throughout the year. Ralambshovsparken is one of the city’s best parks and boasts excellent facilities as well as frequent entertainment during the summer months.
