About the Algarve

The Algarve, like many other holiday destinations, contains a healthy mix of holidaymaker and resident. If you are moving to the Algarve, you will, for a while at least, fall into both of these categories. It will not take long however for you to fully adjust to your new surroundings and begin to feel right at home, a transition made easier by the fact that the locals and expatriates in the area are all so welcoming.

Your solid and stable home base now gives you the opportunity to explore this most beautiful part of Portugal, in greater depth and detail. You may already be familiar with some of the regions most popular areas; Albufeira and Armacao de Pera for example are perfect, particularly if you are missing the joys of an English breakfast.

Other areas, like Carvoeiro, Vale de Parra, Vilamoura and Luz for example, have managed to combine the quality holiday resort feel with the inherent beauty and culture that is the Algarve. Many of these larger Algarve towns are surrounded by smaller and very pretty villages with white washed walls, ancient olive trees, vineyards, and orange groves. Golden beaches are to be found in abundance around these small towns and inland, you"ll discover a landscape of rolling hills, farmland, forest and fresh water lakes.

The climate of the area is of course, world famous and rarely disappoints. With over 3000 hours of sunshine a year, the Algarve has experienced snow just once in living memory and even the suggestion of frost on the ground will be enough to trace more than a quizzical look, across the faces of those that have been here a while.

There are roughly a hundred sandy and attractive beaches fronting on to the Atlantic Ocean and the sea's temperature here is often surprisingly warm even in the winter months. Located on the western tip of Europe with the vast ocean at its southern and western borders, this enviable position gives the region possibly the most unpolluted climate of anywhere on the European continent.

Inland, the natural larder that is the Algarve comes into its own. Throughout the year you will find in this fertile land the rich colours and fragrances of white almond blossom, orchid, orange blossom, acacia and the deep purple of the jacaranda. Cherries, strawberries and melons are added to the mix in May and June and the summer months bring with them grapes, figs and almonds. November is the time for chestnuts and in December the yearly cycle starts all over again with the picking of the first sweet and juicy Algarve oranges.

The Algarve calendar is peppered with festivals, fairs, and carnivals that might lead the uninitiated to think that life in the region is one long holiday. In reality many of these holidaysť have strong roots in ancient and strictly observed religion. Each town and village has its own special saint's day and each of the trades; woodcutter, fisherman and stonemason etc, has its own pagan spirit saint who also needs to be revered in festival form throughout the year.
