Moving House to Sweden - Lund

Moving House to Sweden – Lund

Are you thinking about moving house to Lund in Sweden? This attractive city is famous for having one of the oldest and best-known universities in Scandinavia, which has helped it become an increasingly attractive place for chemical, medical and electronics companies to set up here.

The Moving Partnership offers high-quality removals services to all parts of Sweden, including Lund. Here is our guide to the city.

The History of Lund
Lund, which is in the southern Swedish province of Scania, is believed to have been founded in the year 990. Originally both the city and the province were part of Denmark. It was not until the early 18th century that both came under Swedish rule.

The city’s major landmarks are its university and cathedral. The university was founded in 1666, and is now the largest in Sweden, with a student population of around 47,000, although not all of them live in the city. The cathedral was built in the late 11th and early 12th centuries and it helped Lund become the religious heart of the region, with lots of monasteries, nunneries and priories being built around it.

In more recent years Lund’s commercial sector has become increasingly important, with many high-tech and telecoms companies based here. The food packaging giant Tetra Pak is also a major employer in the city.

Getting There and Getting Around
The closest international airport to Lund is in Copenhagen, the Danish capital, which is about 45 minutes’ drive from the city. You can also fly in via other Swedish airports, including Gothenburg or Stockholm, and complete your journey via express train.

Once you arrive, you can see most of the city centre in an afternoon on foot. There are plenty of Skanetrafiken buses if you want to give your feet a rest, but you must buy your ticket in advance as none of the drivers take cash. There are also 17 bike hire stations dotted around the city. The first half hour of each ride is free, after which there is a sliding scale of charges.

The Main Attractions
Lund Cathedral’s two striking towers dominate the city’s skyline. The cathedral attracts more than 700,000 visitors a year. As well as the stunning internal architecture, tourists also come to see the spectacular astronomical clock which chimes daily at midday and 3pm (1 and 3pm on Sundays) and the free organ concerts which take place every Saturday,

Close by is the History Museum, or Historiska Museet, which has nine galleries telling the story of the city. It boasts the second-largest collection of exhibits in Sweden, dating as far back as the Iron, Stone and Bronze ages. If you have more contemporary tastes, after your move, visit Lund Art Gallery in Martenstorget Square. This only exhibits modern art, so the displays often change.

Another must-see is the city’s Botanical Garden, which is the ideal place to chill out and relax. You can find more than 7,000 plant species in its 20 acres, which are part of Lund University. You can also visit Stadsparken, a picturesque park south-west of the city centre, if you are looking for somewhere to have a picnic.

Lund also has plenty of family-friendly attractions. Hogevall, a centre specialising in water sports, is in Stadsparken. Youngsters can create a splash on the many slides and jump towers.  If you are prepared to venture a little further afield, the regional zoo – Skanes Djurpark – is around 50km to the north of the city in Hoor. Moose, bears, wolves and golden eagles can all be seen here. Fans of the Wallace and Gromit animation series should check out the special area the zoo has devoted to Shaun the Sheep.

Shopping Around
Lund has several squares which form the focal point of the city’s shopping districts. The main square, Stortorget, has plenty of shops around the city hall.  Martenstorget, which is south-east of the main square, hosts a daily indoor market called Saluhallen which is the ideal place to buy all your fresh fruit and vegetables.

The city also has several malls where everything is under one roof. Nova Lund, west of city centre, is the most well-known of these, with 675 shops, restaurants and cafes.

Food and Drink
The main ‘food street’ is Klostergatan where you should be able to find something to your taste, whether it is fine dining, a café or specialist food shops. Several of the city’s restaurants have been mentioned in the White Guide, which is the Scandinavian equivalent of a Michelin guide.

Regional food specialities include asparagus, which is grown on the outskirts of northern Lund. You can also try Knake, a tasty, protein-rich but low-fat hot dog which first found its way onto Lund dinner plates around a century ago. It is supposed to make a cracking sound when you bite into it. A craft beer from the local Lundbryggeriet brewery is the perfect drink to go with this.
