About Portugal – Setúbal

If you are arranging house moves to Setúbal, this attractive town, with a population of 135,000, was once Portugal’s most important centre of the fishing industry, particularly in connection with sardines. Today it is a busy tourist resort with cafes, bars, beaches, shops, restaurants, hotels, and resorts. Whether you like visiting museums, relaxing by the coast, or visiting historical monuments, there is a wealth of new sites to explore once you have settled in the city.

Setúbal is a thriving port city, home to the fourth busiest port in Portugal. Among the many industries based here include ship building and repair, as well as the manufacture of paper, cement and pesticides.

Attractions of Setúbal

If you are moving to Setúbal the city has plenty of attractions including beaches, such as Portinho da Arrábida, Figueirinha, Galápos and Galapinhos. Some companies also run boat trips to see the dolphins, which are enjoyed by people of all ages.

A number of museums and old buildings are based here, including the Work Museum, which charts the city’s industrial heritage, and Jesus Church which contains a fascinating collection of artworks dating back to the 1500s. Alternatively, the Castle of Palmela, which has its roots in the 8th century, stands majestically on top of the Serra da Arrábida hills and is the perfect destination to enjoy stunning panoramic views over the Tagus and Sado estuaries. The 16th century monastery, Convento de Nossa Senhora da Arrábida or Convent of Our Lady of Arrábida, lies in the breathtaking 42 sq mile Arrábida National Park.

However, if you have the time and want to explore further afield, you can get to Troia by bus which has a variety of upmarket flats and casinos, or there are regular bus and train services to and from Lisbon. To get to and from the UK, the city is just a 35 mile drive from Lisbon Airport.

Shopping in Setúbal

You will find all sorts of interesting shops and boutiques off from Bocage Square, as well as cafes to relax in. If you like indoor shopping centres, Alegro Setúbal has recently been extended and now has 114 shops, as well as a cinema, health club, children’s play areas and climbing walls.
